Walking is one of the most common and easiest exercises to do. It requires little to no equipment with the exception of good shoes. As the weather cools, warmer clothing becomes essential, especially layers. With the days getting shorter, if you find yourself walking in the dark, add reflective clothing so you are visible.

To increase the intensity of your daily walk,

  • Pick up the pace from the one you usually do.

  • Try a course with more hills on it.

  • Pump your arms as you walk, or add small hand weights

  • Try ankle weights, if your knees and hips allow

  • To engage your core while you’re moving, think about pulling your belly button toward your spine.

  • Stand up straight, push your shoulders back and keep your chin parallel to the ground. Keep your focus about 5 feet in front of you.

If you find yourself inside because of the weather or dark, there are ways to increase the intensity of treadmill work outs:

  • Increase your speed safely

  • Increase the incline

  • Walk longer

  • Walk more frequently

  • Never underestimate the workout that you can get from going up and down a set of steps. Repeatedly!

Before you start, remember to warm up for 5-10 minutes. Here's how:

  • Knee raises

  • Knee bends, bringing your foot up behind you

  • Shoulder shrugs

  • Arm circles

  • Lift your heels-weight on your toes

You’ll find some people are more interested in how many steps they take than the fundamental movement of walking.

Going outside changes your perspective, your mood, and that’s where the fresh air is.
