Everyone has heard the advice to drink 8 glasses of water a day. Do you? What does it do for you? Your body? Weight loss? Your mood? Please note these three surprising effects of dehydration.

Three Surprising Effects of Dehydration

Balance: One of the most surprising effects of less-than-ideal water intake is how it affects your balance. You may feel off or less than confident, especially balancing on one foot.

Low Blood Pressure: Another result of dehydration is the reduction of blood volume-your sweat, urine and respiration are compromised and could lead to low blood pressure.

Cognitive Function: Even mild dehydration can impair concentration, alertness, and short term memory. Severe dehydration can lead to confusion and dizziness.

Dehydration can have other, more commonly known effects:

  • When exercising, dehydration can increase your fatigue and decrease coordination.

  • Dehydration can affect digestive issues leading to constipation.

  • Skin health is impacted by your water intake because water is needed to keep it elastic and hydrated. Not to mention looking its best regardless of age.

  • Water is necessary for regulating body temperature, helping the body to cool itself decreasing the risk of heat exhaustion and heat stroke.

  • Less than ideal water intake could lead to electrolyte imbalance: so important for muscle and nerve function.

Here are some ways to be make keeping up with hydration a little easier:

Flavor Your Water (it makes it easier to drink more)

  • Try adding cucumbers, berries, slices of citrus fruits, or herbs like mint or or basil.

Drink Herbal Teas

  • Iced or hot, herbal teas are hydrating due to their lack of caffeine.

Eat High-Water Content Vegetables and Fruits:

  • Cucumbers

  • Celery

  • Tomatoes

  • Lettuce (iceberg is the leader in water content)

  • Zucchini

  • Watermelon

  • Cantaloupe

  • Honeydew

  • Oranges and grapefruit

  • Berries

Make it a Part of Your Day:

  • Keep a water-filled bottle with you all day

  • Take several sips per hour to keep a steady effort

Avoid "Water Thieves":

Avoiding things that pull water from your body helps to stay hydrated. Common culprits include:

  • Caffeine

  • Alcohol

  • Salty snacks

All in all, keeping hydrated is a smart thing to do to fuel your body. Need more tips? Send me an email or call me at:  908.619.8768, I look forward to working with you.
